Request To Invoke Section 5

A resident in my ward has been dealing with some hard partying young tenants next door. They contacted me requesting that police levy nuisance abatement fees as laid out in section 5 (Repeat Nuisance Service Calls) of the Nuisance Bylaw. The Chief informs me that Bylaw Enforcement Officer has set the wheels in motion.

Beautify the meridian

Received an email from a resident requesting that the traffic meridian at a particular intersection (just outside my ward, by the way) be beautified with flowers and/or shrubs, trees, etc.

Stop Sign or Speed Bumps

Received a call from a resident requesting either a stop sign or speed bumps for his street. This is becoming a very common request. Speeding is a problem.

Stinky Bin

Received an email last night from a resident who is concerned with the stench from her compost bin and would like Island Waste Management to provide bin cleaning services as part of the Waste Watch program. Advised her that Waste Watch is under the authority of the Province… and sent links to several pressure washer companies in the area.

Seeking Restitution

I received a call from a man whose car was badly vandalized by a group of very young kids. The police caught them but their parents have yet to compensate him for the damages. Called the Police Chief to get things rolling.

Hero

I resident called and asked if he could pick me up and show me something. An odd request, given he made no indication of *what* he wanted to show me. Turned out this man’s hero is Terry Fox. He took me to Terry Fox Drive behind the govt buildings to ask that the street be improved with sidewalks, lighting and perhaps a statue to honour Terry.

Bikes-only Lane for Victoria Park

I received an email tonight from a resident of my ward who would like to see the inside lane of the Victoria Park roadway closed to vehicle traffic.

Can’t Keep Up

The calls and emails have been too numerous lately to post here in this space. Will resume posting them when (if?) the volume slows.

The Yacht Club Chronicles

Received a call yesterday from a member of the yacht club regarding negotiations to sell their property and relocate to the  east on land owned by the Charlottetown Harbour Authority. Many issues involved here, not the least of which is the eventual fate of the current CYC property — a very important waterfront property that needs careful consideration from city planning.

Donations & Developers

Received a call from a member of the board of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation regarding a large donation they are requesting from the city. Also, received several communications via email and phone from a property developer who is upset about a city decision.

Abandoned Car

I received an email this morning about a car that had been apparently abandoned on a residential street more than a week ago. Curbside overnight parking is not allowed  at this time of year, and it had been blocking traffic and snow plows. I contacted the Police and just received word from the resident that it has now been towed away.

Junk Mail

I received an email from a resident of Ward 3 concerning the delivery of advertising flyers. The concern was that these are often tossed in heaps on doorsteps and driveways, and they invariably get blown around the neighbourhood, causing a mess. I’ve contacted The Guardian, which manages flyer delivery.

Tax Questions

I had a Google Chat with someone who wanted to know more about the idiosyncracies of the commercial tax loopholes in Charlottetown. I have a request out to city staff for more info.

Flood Prevention

Got another email last night regarding snow covered catch basin drains in a flood prone area. Given the heavy rain, I had a duty crew dispatched to clear the drains.

One Call, Two Reporters

Received a call from CBC. Spoke to one reporter, then he handed off the phone to another. Questions about the proposed new building on Fitzroy and parking.
