Parking Strategy

A couple of weeks ago a consultant from Hatch Mott MacDonald presented the final report of the parking strategy that was commissioned by the City last year. The report was stamped CONFIDENTIAL at the time. At a Committee of the Whole Council meeting last night I asked that the report be made public. It was agreed that the Mayor will officially receive the report at next Monday’s monthly public meeting of Council, and the document will become public. It should be available by download from the City’s website next week.

UPDATE: The report is now available for download.

I’m looking forward to getting my hands on that document! Admittedly, I am not a huge fan that the decision to build another parking structure downtown. I really believe that the money could have been better spent (whether the developer’s or the city’s) on initiatives that will lead the city toward a more sustainable transportation infrastructure. Let’s hope that the Parking Strategy has some really innovative ideas and plans to counteract the current single-occupant vehicle scenario that both the city and the province are continuing to fund with taxpayer dollars.

I’m told we are awaiting the final copy in electronic format from the consultant. It should be on the city website in the next day or two.

Hmm — two days and still no parking strategy. :(

Yes, I know. I’ve been checking the City website regularly myself. I will inquire again tomorrow morning if it’s still not there. Someone is making me look bad! ;-)

Just spoke to a city staffer. The consultant was contacted earlier in the week, and was just going to clean up the document before sending the final copy to the city. He had to remove the DRAFT watermark and attach all the appendices. Not a huge task, but that’s what we’re waiting for.

Rob — are the city staffers on strike? Almost two weeks since the Parking Strategy was supposed to his the city website. Should I start a conspiracy theory? :)

CBC now has a copy of the report. I spoke to a reporter yesterday. She obtained it from the City’s Economic Development officer, but it was photocopied from an original, which leads me to believe that we don’t have an electronic copy.
