Junk Mail

I received an email from a resident of Ward 3 concerning the delivery of advertising flyers. The concern was that these are often tossed in heaps on doorsteps and driveways, and they invariably get blown around the neighbourhood, causing a mess. I’ve contacted The Guardian, which manages flyer delivery.

    Hi, Rob,

I too have contacted the Guardian in the past about its cavalier method of flyer distribution. Transcontinental, the Guardian’s owner, makes a good chumk of change from flyer delivery. Perhaps Sears, Sobey’s, the Superstore, Co-op, & all the other stores who pay good money to have their flyers delivered should hear how a good percentage of them end up in ditches and under snowbanks.

I got two replies from The Guardian; one from the person responsible for retail advertising, and another from the person responsible for distribution. Here is some of what I was told:

All inserts should be delivered into the persons mailbox if supplied and if not put on the step.

If they are put on the step they should be put inside a blue bag to protect them from the elements and from blowing around as in this case.

People can request to stop delivery and we take the address off the list.

We also have a phone number published in the Guardian every week for those persons who experience delivery problems to call so we can try to solve the issue right away.
