Public Meeting Regarding Victoria Park

Pursuant to the pertinent sections of the Victoria Park Bylaw, a Public Meeting will be held to hear a presentation by the Host Society for the 2009 Canada Games for the use of Victoria Park for the hosting of one or more events. The presentation will include an overview of renovations to the Memorial Field as well as a proposal to expand the existing tennis courts.

WHEN: Thursday, October 4th, 7:00pm
WHERE: Rodd Charlottetown Hotel

I think there will be a good turnout for this meeting. The more the merrier!

    Dear Rob,

I just wanted to put my two cents worth in about Victoria Park. I am very saddened to learn that city council is even considering removing more green space for sport facilities. I thought they had turned the corner and were starting to appreciate what we have. The new plantings of trees and native species has been a long time coming and sorely needed. It seems that every time the council needs a quick fix it turns to the park.

    Sincerely,
    Hope Hyndman

Thanks Hope. The meeting was quite well attended last night. The Canada Games people, as well as the tennis PEI people, presented a convincing case for locating the tennis venue in Victoria Park. There are a number of factors in this plans favour, not the least being cost of locating the venue anywhere else (there must be eight courts). I have serious reservations about building two more courts in VP, but even the usual defenders of the park were somewhat won over last night. There appears to be a willingness to decommission some of the built facilities in the park in the future (relocate the skate board park, and one, maybe two, of the smaller baseball fields, close one lane of the park roadway, etc). My personal preference would be to have a master plan drawn up for Victoria Park so we know exactly what to expect for the future. This is something I will be pursuing.
    Thanks again for your comments.
