About That Photo

A few people have asked about the photo of me that appeared in the Guardian. It’s the same photo that appears here on this website as well as on some of the print material that will be hitting mailboxes shortly. Well, the story behind the photo is worth a small chuckle.

I originally had some photos taken for the purpose of submitting one with the press release announcing my intention to run for city council. They were casual photos taken very quickly against a wall at the office of a member of my campaign team (hereinafter referred to as my “Handlers”). Shortly before we wanted to submit the press release I was told the photos were no good and would have to be repeated. This caused somewhat of a panic on my part and I decided to take matters into my own hands.

It was a warm Wednesday evening and Kelly and I had been tooling around in the yard with the boys. As the sun was beginning to set I made a mad dash to capture the last bit of the day’s natural light. I ran upstairs and shaved as fast as possible without cutting myself to pieces, pulled on a v-neck sweater over my t-shirt and ran down to the basement to retrieve our camera. Kelly took a few pictures against the back of our house but I’d been sweating like a wild boar from all the panicked running around and the pictures were terrible. We tried again against the side of the house, me wiping my brow with a paper towel between takes, and Kelly fending off two hungry boys pulling at her sweater. It was all a bit stressful. How I managed a smile that looks half genuine, I’m not sure.

So there you have it. I’m a bit like one of those news anchormen that — legend has it — sits behind his desk wearing a shirt, tie, and jacket, and nothing but underwear from the waist down. In my case, I was wearing an old pair of faded and frayed cargo shorts and sneakers. And don’t let the dry brow fool you, I was sweating profusely.
